The Test

Rugged tents dotted the tundra as camps were set up. A handful of orcs and elves returned from the forest with arms full of wood to start fires. Groups of grey-skinned orcs and dark-skinned dwarves huddled together around fires to keep warm while those with paler skin helped with forming kitchens and shelter for those not immune to the cold.

As he finished putting up one of the last tents whose fabric was tattered as it blew lazily in the wind, Illume was grateful that it no longer stormed at night. Those not biologically equipped to handle the weather had a greater chance of survival. Urtan and Melpomene spent the evening together with him showing her his small glass figurines and her sharing ancient battle stories with him.

In the distance, Illume noticed Nari and Ingrid walking into the forest. Approaching Commander Stark, who was running drills with his men, he waved for them to stop. Stark turned and saluted Illume as he grew closer. He saluted the vampire back.

“The winds can get pretty violent here at night,” Illume informed the commander. “It’s imperative the fires don’t go out for the safety of the refugees.”

“I noticed some are not native to the north. We will ensure no one freezes,” he replied and turned to his men. “Distribute your travel packs; we will continue drills later.”

“Thank you,” Illume replied.

“That’s why we’re here,” Stark commented with an elegant bow.

Patting Stark’s shoulder, Illume moved past the vampire and continued toward the forest, weaving in and out of people talking, arguing, and sparring, some in styles and languages he recognized, others the ring had to translate. A gentle wind made the trees rustle, covering up the sounds of his footsteps. A small orange flame glistened a few yards ahead of him.

Moving forward, he could hear Nari and Ingrid speaking together in low, barely audible murmurs. As he crept closer, they became more easily understandable. Keeping in the shadows, Illume leaned against a tree and watched as Nari sat down on one side of a firepit where she’d stuck her sword in to bring it to life and Ingrid sat on the other.

“I’m going to ask you a couple of short questions. I want you to answer honestly and as quickly as possible. Do you understand?” Nari instructed.

“I do,” Ingrid replied with a nod.

“Do you know why we’re having this conversation?” Nari asked.

“Not exactly,” Ingrid responded with a shake of her head, “but I assume it has something to do with that book of yours.”

“I’m thirty years old. How old are you?” Nari questioned.

“I want to say twenty-six, but I know that’s a lie,” Ingrid replied.

“Why do you think that’s a lie?” Nari asked.

“Because I know I’m only three,” Ingrid whispered.

“What did you do this morning?” Nari leaned forward as she spoke.

“I walked from the Catacombs to Malmo with you, Illume, and Melpomene,” she responded. “But that usually takes weeks. Why didn’t it take weeks?”

“Let’s not dwell on that now. Just focus on the questions.” Nari attempted to right the ship.
